Dave Benton, a local news anchor in Illinois, revealed to his colleagues and viewers last week that he has terminal cancer — and he made the announcement live on air.
"Basically my cancer is back and it's too big for surgery and radiation," Benton said during the broadcast. "Doctors have told me that I may have four to six months to live."
Benton has been receiving radiation treatments since last year, and noted in January via Twitter that his hair had begun to fall out. He concluded treatment in February, but recently discovered that the cancer had returned.
"I believe that I'm in God's hands," Benton, who's worked for the station for about nine years, told viewers. "I'm at peace, and I know that He's going to take care of the days ahead and that the goal here is to have the best ones possible."
Benton says he plans to keep working for as long as he's able to. "The viewers have so supported me through this,'" Benton said. "I'm dedicated to continue good work."
