The Vampire Diaries may mostly revolve around the supernatural, but if you pay attention there are quality lessons for viewers to take away — especially from the spunky, self-aware and constantly evolving Caroline Forbes.
Yes Caroline, played by Candice Accola, started out as a Queen Bee b---h, but she's since grown into her vampire self, with some of the most heartwarming, honest and often wise words of wisdom. Here are our favorite life lessons learned from Caroline. Plus: Accola shares her personal favorites as well.
"It's hard for me to show kindness to people that hate me. I'm not that evolved." — Season 1, "There Goes the Neighborhood"
Lesson Learned: With her own take on "Haters gonna hate," Caroline demonstrated a surprising level of self-awareness. Giving the cold shoulder might not be the most "evolved" thing to do, but simply put: there are some relationships that can never be fixed. Why bother repeatedly demeaning yourself in hopes of a happy ending that will never come? Just cut your losses and move on.
The Vampire Diaries Exclusive First Look: A new city and a new 'do for Elena!
"I am gonna drink until someone is hot enough to make out with." -Season 1, "Haunted"
Lesson Learned: Sometimes you just need a pair of beer goggles to have some fun.
"I may have been some pathetic, insecure mess after the party, but do not mistake that for me being a pushover. Because I do not let guys mess with my head anymore." - Season 1, "History Repeating"
Lesson Learned: Midway through the first season, Caroline already started to realize that you don't need a guy's approval to have self-satisfaction. Yes, you can still get upset and hurt by them, but as long as you know when it's time to move on, let it go, or just brush their stupid actions off, that's what matters.
"What's the rush? Why are you hurrying to get to a relationship that'll never work?"- Season 2, "Memory Lane"
Lesson Learned: Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you want a relationship to work. If it doesn't have a realistic future (like a vampire being with a human), why bother when the ending will only hurt that much more?
The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec: We don't have plans to bring Tyler back (for now)
"I'm too smart to be seduced by you." —Season 3, "All My Children"
Lesson Learned: Charm can be intoxicating, which makes it all the more important to separate a romantic gesture from real romance. Flowers (and hand-drawn portraits) might be nice, but anyone can seduce with the right amount of money or je ne sais quoi. Make sure your head and your heart say "go'"before jumping into anything too quickly.
"You are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you." — Season 4, "Into the Wild"
Lesson Learned: For bullies, there's nothing more gratifying than getting a reaction. Don't give them that satisfaction! Hold your tongue and save your energy for something more productive — like color-coding your sock drawer or knitting cummerbunds for your cat. Pretty much anything is better than giving your provoker the satisfaction of yelling back (no matter how good it might feel).
"Anyone capable of love is capable of being saved." — Season 4, "Into the Wild"
Lesson Learned: No matter how far to the dark side someone might journey, there's always hope for redemption as long as the person doesn't turn their back on love. Just ask Darth Vader!
How will the Salvatores handle dark Elena? The Vampire Diaries boss answers that and more!
Candice Accola's picks:
"I'm a terrible awful person. But I'm working on it."- Season 1, "Children of the Damned"
Caroline's Lesson Learned: "This is the first time we saw Caroline start to accept her flaws," Accola says. "When Matt overhears Caroline talk about bus boys in a degrading way, he calls her out on in. Instead of victimizing herself or manipulating him to feel sorry for her, Caroline confidently admits her mistake. I was very thankful early on to know that I was playing a character that the writers were creating to grow and evolve."
"I get it. Your father didn't love you, so you assume that no one else will either. And that's why you compel people or you sire them or you try to buy them off, but that's not how it works. You don't connect with people, because you don't even try to understand them."- Season 3, "Dangerous Liaisons"
Caroline's Lesson Learned: Accola explains,"We see Klaus and Caroline truly connect for the first time. She challenged Klaus' way of thinking also, while subconsciously saying, 'If you'd try to understand me, we could have a real connection.'"
The Vampire Diaries returns on Thursday, March 14 at 8/7c on The CW.
