The Week in Superlatives: Best Tribute, Worst Dog Dad, and the Goodbye Bliss

Relive the most standout moments of the week in TV

It's been another busy week in TV, so to get you up to speed on the most memorable moments of the small screen this week, follow along below as we dole out a few worthless (but fun!) prizes to the most standout moments, for better and for worse.

The best tribute: Hats off to Adam Sandler for making it count. Sandler returned to the Saturday Night Livestage last weekend to host the show for the very first time and the first thing he did was poke fun at the fact that he was unceremoniously fired from the sketch comedy series a couple of decades ago. He wasn't the only one who got canned that day, though, as co-star Chris Farley was also booted from the cast of SNL at the same time. Sandler mentioned as much in his opening monologue, and, later on, Sandler decided to share a very personal song he wrote about the late, great comedian, and it was both hilarious and completely gutting. It's hard to imagine a more fitting tribute than that.

The worst dog dad: There's a lot that can be said about the latest episode of Game of Thrones, and most of it is ... not good. Between some puzzling character decisions, an irresponsible bit of dialogue about sexual assault survival, the dizzying pace at which they're trying to make Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) look like a Mad Queen, and, of course, coffeegate, fans are understandably becoming pessimistic about the show's final pair of episodes. Perhaps the biggest letdown of the episode, though, was the moment when Jon Snow (Kit Harington) sent his direwolf, Ghost, to go roam with the freefolk and didn't even bother to give the Very Good Boy a goodbye pat. This was the same ever-faithful pup who wouldn't leave his side even when he was dead and cold! The same furbaby that lost an ear in the battle against White Walkers so that he could help save the realms of men. Jon Snow really does know nothing. Woof.

The goodbye bliss: Shadowhunters fans still might be rune-d over the show coming to an end, but at least the series finale gave Team Malec a reason to dance. Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario) said "I do" in a picture-perfect ceremony, and after so much fan investment in the demon-slayer and warlock's romantic connection across the show's three seasons, this was the payoff 'shippers deserved.

The royal surprise: The name Archie is just too TV for this to be a coincidence. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a baby boy this week, and instead of going with one of the familiar royal monikers in his monarchical lineage, like Henry or Edward or Alexander, the couple chose to call their boy Archie. It might've busted all betting ballots, but the internet seemed to really appreciate the royal couple's obvious obsession with Riverdale.

The choice that needed to happen: Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has finally decided what she wants -- more importantly, who she wants. In Jane the Virgin's latest episode, our title heroine got to spend some quality time with the real non-memory-wiped Michael (Brett Dier) and, after seeing how much he has changed of the years, wants to put this love triangle business to bed and continue to pursue her happily ever after with Rafael (Justin Baldoni). Of course, Raf still isn't thrilled about her little trip to Montana with Michael right now, but now that the emotional tug-of-war session is over, we're excited to see whether and how the two lovebirds and find their forever.

The game-changing breakup: Throughout all the madness onEmpire, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard)'s turbulent relationship has always been the backbone of the series, but in this week's finale, the two called it quits in spectacularly dramatic fashion. It could be forever, but even if they do manage to patch things up, the Lyons will never look the same again.

The strangest suitor: The list of prospects for Hannah Brown's season of The Bachelorettecame in this week, and, man, oh man, there are some interesting characters in this bunch. The bio that's just bound to put some jaws on the floor, though, belongs to a guy named Matteo, who says he's fathered more than 100 children as a result of his sperm donations. Sure, that sounds like the plot to a B-movie comedy nobody would watch, but, hey, at least Hannah can be sure of his potency?

Best binge: Cancel all your other plans for this weekend because Netflix'sThe Society is definitely worth your time. The series puts a couple hundred teenagers in an alternate reality version of their hometown where there are no adults, no animals, no technologies, and, most importantly, no rules, except the ones they decide to make.
