When it comes to being a good dad, Dean McDermott says Cliff Huxtable, from the '80s sitcom The Cosby Show, is his role model.

As host of the upcoming TV Guide Network special Modern TV Dads: Father Doesn't Know Best (Sun, 8/7c), McDermott tells that while he'd love to emulate 24's Jack Bauer for the "cool, tough guy factor," he relates more to Dr. Huxtable because he "loves to goof around, to keep things light," but also isn't afraid of a little discipline.

Just as Cliff had a strong relationship with his wife Claire, Dean's biggest advice for new fathers is to take care of your partner-in-crime.

"Giving birth is not a walk in the park and she's really going to need help. Your paternal instincts will kick in and you'll take care of the baby, but make sure you've got something for mama because she's been through a lot," he says.

McDermott's is married to Beverly Hills, 90210 vet Tori Spelling, and together they have documented the first years of their marriage on Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.

On the recent season finale, the couple renewed their vows — an experience that McDermott calls "amazing" — in front of friends and family, who didn't attend their 2006 wedding. The pair incorporated elements of their Fiji wedding into the renewal and had their two children, Liam and Stella, standing with them in a sandbox.

"Hearing them play on the sand, tugging on your leg, and [then] Liam's pants fell down," McDermott says. "It was like, yeah, this is reality of what a married couple is, being a mom and dad, these things happen, this is life."

So will Liam and Stella be getting a brother or sister anytime soon? McDermott says not right away. "We are definitely taking a little break right now to enjoy the two little munchkins we have, get them out of diapers, but we definitely want to expand the McDermott clan. We want to have a third."
