Ricky Gervais: Out of England — The Stand-Up Special

Ricky Gervais has succeeded in making his self-absorbed characters on the The Office and Extras likable and non-threatening. So perhaps it's not a surprise that, even when he plays himself, the same holds true. Tonight's stand-up material, which hews more to anecdotes than punchlines, starts with more grimaces than laughs, but once he gets past the subjects of cancer and obesity (and has a few sips from a large can of beer), he develops a nice rhythm with tales of fame, sharks, Nazis and stupid friends. — Joe Friedrich

Kevin Costner and his band Modern West probably won't change the face of country music like Randy Travis did back in the 1980s, but the Oscar winner and the big baritone singer share the stage on tonight's Opry edition, taped at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Costner, a country-music lover, released his debut CD, Untold Truths, Nov. 11. — Tim Holland

Accidental Friendship

Most fans of Chandra Wilson are used to seeing her play the no-nonsense Dr. Bailey on Grey's Anatomy. But a whole new side of the actress emerges tonight as she plays a down-on-her-luck homeless woman who forms an unlikely friendship with a police officer. The story is based on the real-life experiences of Yvonne Caldwell and officer Tami Baumann, who met by chance in 2003 after Yvonne's beloved dogs caught Tami's eye. — Brie Hearn

The Two Mr. Kissels

John Stamos and Anson Mount star in this Lifetime original as Andrew and Rob Kissel, two wealthy and handsome brothers who seemed to have it all. Based on a true story, the cable film uses flashbacks to follow the trail of adultery and embezzlement that led to their tragic deaths within a few years of each other. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

"You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch..." and "I have three words to describe you, and I quote: stink, stank, stunk..." are lyrics etched into the memories of every child (and adult) who has ever seen this perennial Yuletide cartoon, which first aired in 1966. Dr. Seuss' tale of a small-hearted, green-faced fiend who schemes to steal Christmas from the whimsical Whos of Whoville is a ghoulishly heartwarming delight from start to finish. Chuck Jones' animation, Boris Karloff's narration and Thurl Ravenscroft's renditions of the wonderful songs are all as fresh as ever. — Rick Toy
