The Originals: The Mikaelsons Take a Stroll Down Memory Lane

Replaying those Klayley flashbacks FOREVER

It's been ages since we last saw all the Mikaelsons in the same place on The Originals, but thanks to some Chambre de Chasse magic, all five siblings (plus Marcel) finally got to reunite on the astral plane -- and then proceeded to immediately start sniping at each other. Ahhh, family.

Freya's little spell kept them on ice while she and Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) worked on extracting the dark magic forcing them all apart.

The search for the keys to release them from their mental prison came complete with quite a few Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) flashbacks. We got to see her first day in the Mikaelson family home all those years ago, the day she and Klaus named their daughter, and even the day he decided to abandon her and Hope.

Oblivious to all of it was Elijah (Daniel Gillies), who spent most of his time desperately looking for a key amidst memories he could no longer remember. At least, that's what he wanted his siblings to think. As it turns out, the spell to restore Elijah's memories worked just fine, it was Elijah's refusal to remember that was hindering the process. The really heartbreaking part came when everyone realized that it was actually his fear of knowing what he'd done to Hayley that was holding him back from opening that Red Door and regaining his identity.

Haylijah. Feels. Everywhere.

The Originals: Is Hayley's Death Permanent?!

Ultimately, when all was said and done and the keys were found, Elijah still had to go through that Red Door to return to the real world, which meant facing a rude awakening and realizing he'd killed the woman he loved. And what a rude awakening it was.

It's worth mentioning here that Daniel Gillies has given a few of his best performances of the series this year, and this was definitely one of them.

Despite being reunited with his feelings for Hayley, he did return to Antoinette (Jaime Murray) to save her life with a cure Klaus generously handed over, perhaps not wanting to rip two women Elijah loved away from him in the span of one day. Those same feelings made it impossible for him to stay with Antoinette though, putting an end to any ideas he had at making a fresh start and moving on with his life.

If it's left up to Hope though, that life might not last very long.

In addition to forcing Elijah to regain his memories, Hope managed to extract the dark magic from her family, uniting it once again inside of her. That's awesome, considering the Mikaelsons get to be together again, but not so awesome considering that power makes her volatile and even downright dangerous.

As far as she's concerned, Elijah killed her mother, and throwing him a "welcome home" bash is so not part of her grieving process. Getting that magic out of her should be priority numero uno for Klaus and Freya, followed shortly by quelling this vampire purist rebellion that's still brewing in New Orleans.

The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
