The Fosters Exclusive: Ximena Finally Gets Her Stay Hearing!

Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) is going to get a big win on Tuesday's episode of The Fosters, but she's not out of the woods yet.

In TV Guide's exclusive clip, Ximena is being granted a hearing to decide if she can get a stay order that will allow her to leave the church she's been hiding out in. That way she can be a guardian to Poppy and resume her life until her DACA status is officially decided by the government. Callie's (Maia Mitchell) demonstration at Shiloh McCullen's rally helped get Ximena the press she needed to take this giant step toward her freedom, but it's not all good news.

Ximena has the meeting, but she, her lawyer and her friends will still have to convince a judge that she didn't threaten the United States government during the protest on her college campus. Until they can do that, Ximena has to stay in the church, which means she can't go to visit her parents who have finally been located in a detention center. She's still going to be isolated for a little while longer, which is a crucial part of the story The Fosters is trying to tell.

What Do We Want from The Fosters Spin-Off?

"We think that this is such a timely and compelling story right now with families being ripped apart," The Fosters executive producer Joanna Johnson explains. "They are taking parents away from citizen children, which is Poppy, and detaining them. Sometimes we don't even know where these people are being detained. It takes time to find them in the system. Just the fact that these people are so vulnerable and so unsure of what their status is going to be, whether they are going to be deported or be in this country, and the toll it is taking on families."

The creative team behind the series is hoping that Ximena's storyline will put more pressure on lawmakers to take immigration reform and saving DACA seriously.

"We think it's important that we keep putting a human face on this issue so that the politicians and all the dealmaking that goes on in Washington, that there's some public pressure on them to stop all the bickering and do something for these kids and these families who are living in fear every day," Johnson said. "As far as undocumented people in this country, we need to come up with immigration reform and we need to do something about those people. If they've been here for a long time and they haven't committed crimes and they've been good citizens, they should have an opportunity to be able to stay. We feel passionately about that."
