Just days after the mass shooting in an Orlando gay nightclub traumatized the country, The Fosters will air a special PSA ahead of its Season 4 premiere on Monday — which coincidentally centers on a school shooting.
Freeform confirmed to TVGuide.com that Fosters stars Cierra Ramirez and Sherri Saum will deliver a special message dedicated to the victims of the Orlando attack before the episode airs. The premiere and second episode of the season, scheduled before the Orlando incident became the worst mass shooting in American history, will tackle gun violence and the trauma after Mariana's (Ramirez) boyfriend Nick (Louis Hunter) steals his father's gun and brings it to school.
"It's something that's happening so much it's almost becoming normal," executive producer Joanna Johnson previously told TVGuide.com. "It almost seems like a weekly occurrence that someone is taking a gun to school. We wanted to explore what the impact of this has on our schools and has on our kids."
The PSA has added significance considering The Fosters centers on lesbian parents Lena (Saum) and Stef (Teri Polo) Adams-Foster and their five children. Over the course of three seasons The Fosters have tackled many issues important to the LGBT community including gay marriage, gay adoption, bisexuality and transgender teens in foster homes.
The Fosters Season 4 premieres Monday, June 20 at 8/9c on Freeform.
