Supergirl: Meet Lucy Lane, James Olsen's Ex

Kara has some competition

Kara's schoolgirl crush on James is about to get complicated.

On Monday's episode of Supergirl (8/7c, CBS), Kara (Melissa Benoist) is so giddy about James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) that even her sister is starting to notice. Too bad Kara is about to get some competition from none other than his ex-girlfriend Lucy Lane, played by Jenna Dewan-Tatum. "Lucy Lane is the sister of Lois Lane, who comes from Metropolis where she used to date James Olsen," executive producer Ali Adler tells "We'll learn a little bit more why else she's there a little bit later." Hmm, could she possibly want to rekindle her relationship with James?

"She comes for James," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg confirms. "Actually, there is also a job aspect to it. But one of the reasons we love Jenna was we needed a love triangle there. We needed somebody who felt different enough from Kara but also felt like somebody you believed James would be interested in."

How CBS' new Supergirl is a hero for our time

Regardless of Lucy's intentions, don't expect to see a catfight anytime soon. Although Lucy's arrival definitely sets up a love triangle, she's not the type of girl who inspires hatred, but rather admiration. "She really is comfortable in her own skin in a way that Kara still is struggling with," executive producer Sarah Schechter says. Adds Adler: "She's not like one of those bitchy women that comes in and is playing foil. You kind of fall in love with her. You can't help but fall in love. I think Kara understands why James loves her."

But what about Kara's buddy Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan)? Does he have a shot or has he been permanently "friend zoned"? "That's a headline: Does Winn Have a 'Schott'? Definitely," Adler says. "We explore all of these emotional triangles and quadrangles throughout the season. He's awesome. You really root for him, and we'll definitely explore that."

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.
