Godzilla's Gareth Edwards is attached to direct one of the promised Star Wars spin-off films, according to the franchise's official website.

Gary Whitta will pen the screenplay, which will be the first standalone Star Wars film. No details about the focus of the spin-off are yet known, but the project is slated for a Dec. 16, 2016, release.

How are these actors famous?

To date, all the Star Wars films, in addition to The Clone Wars animated series, have featured Jedi leads. However, a standalone film opens up the exciting potential for the franchise to explore the shadier side of the Star Wars universe (something audiences clearly enjoy, as evidenced by the popularity of rogue anti-heroes Han Solo, Boba Fett and Lando Calrissian).

In fact, Han and Boba are both rumored as potential leads for a Star Warsspin-off, as well as the sage Jedi master Yoda. It's possible each will get their own spin-off film, since Disney plans to make at least three in addition to the new trilogy, the first of which will hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

Which character are you hoping to see lead their own Star Wars spin-off film?
