Stan Lee's Final MCU Cameo in Avengers: Endgame Is a Heartwarming Send-off

The following post contains light spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

Pop culture icon and comic book legend Stan Lee pops up in Avengers: Endgame for what is sadly his last time making a cameo in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Lee died at the age of 95 last November, but at the time had already filmed a handful of cameos for upcoming Marvel films -- including Endgame. The film, which opens in theaters on Thursday, marks Lee's last appearance in the MCU, a tradition that was started with the very first Iron Man film in 2008.

Lee created many of the iconic characters now featured in the MCU, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, and eventually the larger Avengers team. His quick appearance in every single MCU film has become a fun Easter egg for viewers to find, with Lee popping up everywhere over the last 11 years. At the beginning of Captain Marvel, the first Marvel movie released after Lee's death, the opening studio logo was even redone to feature a collection of Lee's various appearances. And as we close out this chapter in the saga, it's sad but also fitting that Endgame marks his last on-screen appearance.

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) travel back in time to the 1970s, to a secretive army base in New Jersey (the same S.H.I.E.L.D. base featured in both Captain America: The First Avengerand Winter Soldier). Driving by in a vintage car is '70s Stan Lee with long, wavy hair and a mystery woman in the passenger seat. He shouts out the window, "Hey, man! Make love, not war!"

Like all the others, this cameo is short, but it's heartwarming. Marvel has plans to release behind-the-scenes footage of Lee filming his cameos after Endgame.
