Parents of impressionable
Zoey 101 fans aren't the only ones taken aback by
Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy. Decision-makers at a few teen mags are also looking at the 16-year-old through not-as-rosy-colored glasses. "I was considering her for an upcoming cover," the editor in chief of
UsMagazine.com. "But with this news, I'd have to rethink that.... As you can imagine, girls are disappointed in Jamie Lynn." Similarly,
Seventeen's EIC says she might put Spears on the cover but only once she gets past this moment and resumes "a career our readers can look up to. Getting pregnant at 16 is not something we're encouraging."
One person who is standing by Spears is Lisa Whelchel, the former child star of (ironically) The Facts of Life. A mother of two teens (and an author of Christian books), Whelchel tells ABC News, "[Jamie Lynn] is a role model, but it's not her responsibility to be a role model. That's so much pressure on a 16-year-old." As for deciding to keep the baby, she says, "I'm so proud of her for stepping up and being courageous and taking responsibility for her choices. I am supportive of her in that situation."
