SMURFS TO GO 3-D

Here's a big shout-out to Mike Ausiello, who's undoubtedly busy listening to some producer drone on and on at the TCA press tour: Paramount has acquired the film rights to the Smurfs, the former Saturday morning cartoon staple. The plan is for a trilogy of 3-D, CGI-style features under the Nickelodeon Movies shingle, to begin hitting theaters in 2008, the 50th anniversary of Papa  and Co.'s debut as a Belgian comic strip. Oh, wait, Mike just Crackberry'd me his reaction: "I can't wait to tell Azrael. This is just the kind of pick-me-up he needs right now."
