Shannon Tavarez, the Broadway Lion King star whose fight with leukemia drew attention from Alicia Keys and Rihanna, has died. She was 11.
Tavarez died Monday after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia, BroadwayWorld.com reports.
Tavarez, who played Young Nala, was diagnosed in April. When doctors were unable to find a bone-marrow match for transplant, Keys and Rihanna became vocal in the search. As a result, more more than 8,000 people signed up as donors. Despite the outreach, no match was found, and Tavarez underwent an alternative umbilical cord transplant in August.
The New York native made her Broadway debut in The Lion King in September 2009. She left the show in April following her diagnosis.
