Fresh off the announcement of a second season renewal (despite delivering far fewer than the 20 million Simon Cowell prophesied), The X Factor  averaged 11.50 million viewers and 3.9 rating among 18-to-49-year-olds Wednesday night, preliminary Nielsen data shows.

Cowell's sucky soothsaying aside, the singing competition has settled in as a steady, even stalwart, ratings performer. It got 11.78 million for its last outing.

Meanwhile, Modern Family keeps winning Wednesday night and this week entertained 13.28 million people and posting a 5.6 rating in the coveted demo — both highs for the night. Happy Endings had 7.85 million people (3.5 demo rating, tying its series high) tuning in at 9:30/8:30c. Also in prime time's middle hour: the night's second most-watched show Criminal Minds (12.80 million), NBC's Harry's Law (7.09 million) and America's Next Top Model on The CW (1.80 million).

At 8/7, Survivor: South Pacific rounded up 11.87 million viewers on CBS, while ABC's The Middle grabbed 9.35 million and NBC's Up All Night 4.75 million. A repeat of The CW's Ringer got 1.20 million.

In the next half-hour, Suburgatory  scored 8.49 million people while a rerun of Up All Night managed 3.39 million.

In the final prime-time hour, CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation attracted 10.64 million fans; ABC's Revenge drew 8.57 million (its second straight increase); and NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was watched by 7.04 million. But again, Revenge — the No. 1 new show, according to survey -- won the demo fight with a 3.0.
