The series in question, which ran on ABC from September 1986 to June 1988, was indeed called Sledge Hammer. A satire of the Dirty Harry movies and various hard-case cop shows, it starred David Rasche as the titular Det. Insp. Sledge Hammer, who believed his .44 Magnum (called "Gun") was the answer to all law-enforcement dilemmas (and many of life's as well).

His oft-repeated tag line was, "Trust me. I know what I'm doing." The truth was, of course, that it was usually his partner Dori (Anne-Marie Martin) who knew what she was doing. More often than not, Sledge bungled the case and she was the one to solve it.
