Bratt's character, Detective Reynaldo Curtis, joined the long-running NBC hit drama in 1995 and left in 1999 (the end of season nine) to care for his wife, who suffered from multiple sclerosis. In reality, Bratt — until recently the main squeeze of mega-hit mainstay Julia Roberts — wanted more time to pursue a movie career. Jesse L. Martin's Detective Ed Green showed up the next fall as a replacement partner for show stalwart Detective Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach), who, unlike the legions of other characters that have left the series, knows enough to stay on a horse that keeps running and winning.
