For one glorious hour this morning (July 3), it look like Outlander fans were going to get treated to one of the best cameos of all time. Sadly, it turned out Colin O'Donoghue, Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan were just being adorable Twitter dorks.
As Outlander Season 4 wrapped up its final days of filming, Caitriona Balfe tweeted her thanks to all the people who'd made this season a success — including one actor we never expected to show up in the rolling hills of 18th Century Scotland: Colin O'Donoghue.
Twitter naturally went into a tizzy, wondering whether this meant a special guest role was on the way, but O'Donoghue quickly chimed in that he thought there had been some mistake. Damn you, Colin, can't you just let us have this one?! An embarrassed Balfe confirmed the error, saying she'd meant to tag a different Colin in her tweet. Unfortunately, the Internet is forever, and more Outlander cast members decided to get in on the joke.
"Christ... You kept that quiet mate. Welcome to Outlander," Richard Rankin, who plays Roger Wakefield, tweeted.
"Thank you anyway Colin. You've kept us going... from afar!" Sam Heughan joked.
While this was obviously just a hilarious gaffe, it's not like there isn't a good reason for fans to think O'Donoghue might have shown up in Outlander's upcoming season. For one, he's been friendly with the cast for a long time, so it wouldn't exactly be difficult for him to snag a role as a rascally Irishman should the opportunity arise. Second, now that Once Upon a Time has officially come to an end, O'Donoghue is free to pursue new roles he wouldn't have previously had the availability for while he was working a full time gig as Captain Hook.
If you're holding out hope you might see your favorite pirate one day on Outlander, O'Donoghue and Heughan haven't ruled the possibility out entirely.
"Hahah well... there's always season5!? #irishMafia," Heughan tweeted to which O'Donoghue responded, "Anytime!"
Ummm... is it Season 5 yet?
Outlander returns later in 2018.
