The Originals: Can Klaus Pull the Wool Over Marcel's Eyes?

How do you manipulate and defeat someone who knows you better than almost anyone else? That's the dilemma Klaus is facing on The Originals.

Although it's evident that there's a long history between Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and his former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), on last week's episode, viewers saw just how deep the bond goes. As Klaus was settling New Orleans in 1820, he watched a young slave being tortured. Turns out the boy, who didn't even have a name, was the product of the Governor's affair. Klaus felt a connection and took the boy, who he named Marcellus, under his wing.

"That scene with little Marcel was one of my favorite flashbacks we've ever done," Morgan tells TVGuide.com "The feel of the scene set it up so well [with] their history of being beaten down and both having fathers that really wanted nothing to do with them. This is a boy he treated as a son and a young man he respected and took under his wing. So, it's going to be tough for Klaus because there's always going to be a conflict there. There's also pride for Klaus [in] seeing that Marcel has come so far. So, he'll never just want to take him down and kill him. There's going to be complexity there."

Emotions and familial feelings aside, there's also trouble for Klaus considering Marcel has seen — and learned -- all Klaus' tricks. "It's going to be harder to pull the wool over Marcel's eyes, but that's what makes it interesting because there's this game between the two of them," Morgan says. "They really don't trust each other, and they're really sussing each other up. But there are still moments where the cards are laid on the table and then they go back to playing the game. Klaus is going to have to constantly understand that Marcel does know what's going on and change accordingly."

Part of Klaus' plan, which has already hit some bumps, was to stake Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and hand him over to Marcel as a messed up form of trust and collateral. Needless to say, Rebekah (Claire Holt) was furious to learn her favorite brother is stuck in a coffin in the attic of her one-time lover Marcel and his freakishly powerful teenage secret weapon Davina (Danielle Campbell). While both stubborn siblings know that they're more powerful together than apart, they'll continue to bump heads in an effort to take back their brother. "I just filmed a very emotional, family-oriented scene. You'll see a lot of their love and resentment and 1,000 years of pain and conflict," Morgan says.

And how Elijah will feel when he's un-daggererd? "I suppose Elijah would've liked to be let in on the plan before he became a part of it that way," Morgan says.  "Klaus is going to have to earn the trust of his brother and do a fair bit to make up for the daggering, and that's going to take a while. It's still not cool! Although, it's happened so many times, Elijah should've seen it coming, let's be honest. I'm sure he'll wear protective Kevlar in the future."

Once Elijah returns, could the Mikaelsons make amends with Marcel? Or will they face an even bigger threat that causes them all to unite once again? "The whole thing is of such epic proportions that I don't know if they'll bring in a Big Bad," he says. "There have been alliances drawn, but we haven't had an introduction of someone where everybody involved goes, 'Wait a minute, let's team up and take on this person.' The great thing about this is you can already choose who to root for. And with the war brewing, the stakes are already high."
