The star of On Becoming a God in Central Florida has a tough go
In the upcoming Showtime series On Becoming a God in Central Florida, Kirsten Dunst plays a single mother and water park employee living near Orlando who gets roped into a cult-like pyramid scheme business, catches bird flu and has a hallucinogenic experience, and leads a Jazzercise spin-off called Splashercise.
If that all sounds too unbelievable to be true, then you obviously haven't spent much time in Florida.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida Review: Kirsten Dunst Scams the Scammers
The Sunshine State is notorious for its news stories seemingly extracted from the mind of a drunk person, so at the Television Critics Association summer press tour we tested Dunst and her costar Théodore Pellerin on their knowledge of strange Floridian tales by asking them if a headline was a real news story from Florida or an outlandish plotline from popular TV shows. It was a lot harder than it looked.
Though On Becoming a God in Central Florida has its share of bizarre moments, the series has lots to say on classism and The American Dream. Originally slated for YouTube, Showtime picked up the dark comedy, which also stars Mel Rodriguez, Beth Ditto, Ted Levine, and Alexander Skarsgard.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida premieres Sunday, Aug. 25 at 10/9c on Showtime.
