It's going to be hell-raising event indeed when DC's Legends of Tomorrow returns for Season 5.
Actress Olivia Swann has been promoted to series regular for the CW show's upcoming fifth season, Entertainment Weekly reports, which means that Astra Logue's soul-salvaging revenge plot is about to get a whole lot messier for John Constantine (Matt Ryan).
Executive producer Keto Shimizu told EW, "We're so excited about having Astra back this season as our big bad. A lot of what Constantine is going to be dealing with this is season is his very complicated relationship with her and a desire to save her despite all the pain and trouble she's putting us through."
Season 4 ended with Astra — who'd been sent to the netherworld by Constantine when she was a child and has since grown ambitious about her position down there — turning in the soul coins of some vintage villains she thought were "cut down too soon." Included in the to-be-resurrected pile were the names of some of history's most notoriously brutal baddies ever, like Genghis Khan, Mary Tudor, Grigori Rasputin, and Joseph Stalin, as well as more modern murderers like Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy — and, yes, Season 1 villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). "It's a real shame when someone doesn't get to fulfill their destiny. Don't you think?" Astra said of the selections. "Everyone deserves a second act."
Showrunner Phil Klemmer previously told TV Guide that Astra's power move will bring the show back to reality a bit. "As much fun as we had mixing around the world of magic and monsters and creatures and all that, I think we wanted to kind of get back to the roots of the show and root it more firmly in history and historical periods and figures and true villains," he explained. "The scariest villains of all are the ones that existed."
DC's Legends of Tomorrow is expected to return in 2020 on The CW.
