Legacies' Best Ship So Far Is Hope and Josie

Legacies' first season has officially hit its stride, setting up several romances that we're already keeping our eye on. The one ship that's hooked us in most, though, is one that probably wasn't even on the agenda to begin with. Did someone say Hosie?

Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) and Josie Saltzman (Kaylee Bryant) may have dabbled in dark magic together in the Legacies premiere, but that didn't mean they were able yet to overcome years of petty rivalry and antagonism. In this week's episode, though, Josie's squabble with her twin sister, Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) -- who seems to be the one behind all the discord in the first place -- made Hope her unlikely ally. The two had a frank discussion about their history of poking each other into starting fights (which led to an accidental actual poking with a trash picker), and it seemed like Hope and Josie might have reached a detente of sorts.

Without that ever-present animosity between them (or Lizzie's influence), Hope and Josie were able to laugh off their bitter rivalry and start building the foundation of an actual friendship. Not only that, they were both able to delve into some seriously personal discussions, such as Hope's tendency to put her faith in boys that ultimately betray her and Josie's co-dependent nature that often enables her twin to walk all over her. In those fleeting moments of friendship, before Alaric (Matthew Davis) ruined everything and put them back at square one, we got to see the easy connection and chemistry that exists between these girls.

We already know Josie identifies as pansexual (hence her previous relationship with She Who Must Not Be Named), and Hope's sexuality is still TBD at this point, so there definitely is potential for romance in their future. Unfortunately, this future may be a long way off. So far, Legacies had made it clear that Hope's feelings for Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) will be at the forefront of her story this season (when she's not battling dragons and gargoyles, of course) and Josie is careening headlong into a love triangle of sorts with Lizzie and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) -- and that's totally chill. We're eager to see those storylines play out and all of these new romances have great potential. That being said, Hope and Josie have a crazy amount of chemistry, and it would be a shame to waste it.

But before Hope and Josie could ever potentially explore the budding sparks between them, they have a major obstacle to overcome: Lizzie and all her deep-seated insecurities when it comes to Hope. Lizzie's already got a major issue with Hope stealing her dad's attention, and if she starts to steal Josie's too? That's going to be bad news all around and definitely would spell trouble for any potential Hosie relationship, platonic or romantic.

"Hope and Josie, especially, I think there's a world where they would be the best of friends," showrunner Brett Mathews told TV Guide, "but Lizzie makes it all very, very complicated because you're never going to get between Lizzie and Josie... That twin bond is so strong, there's kind of no coming between it."

Josie getting closer to Hope could mean growing farther away from her sister, which we don't imagine will be an easy situation for Lizzie to handle, but it might be exactly what Josie needs right now. And according to Bryant, Josie's discovery of her own individuality will be a main thread this season, and one in which Hope will play a key role.

"Throughout the first season, you're going to see Josie kind of grow into her own and kind of realize who she is outside of Lizzie," Bryant added. "That being said, it might spark a friendship with Hope and it might be something you'll see grow. Lizzie has her own reasons for not liking Hope ... and you'll see Josie kind of figure herself out in that situation outside of her sister."

According to Jenny Boyd, these girls don't just hate each other on principle -- there's a particular pain point in Hope and Lizzie's past that will be explored in later episodes. "There is something that Lizzie thinks that Hope did that might or might not contribute to her sort of negative emotions about her," Boyd teased.

Here's hoping whatever beef lies in Hope and Lizzie's past it's not insurmountable because if Legacies ever does decide to explore Hope and Josie romantically, Lizzie disapproval could be a non-starter.
