Jane Lynch says Ellen DeGeneres "blazed a trail" for her to come out.

"You were at the height of your fame and you came out. And that just blazed a trail for me," Lynch said on Wednesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show, referring to DeGeneres' famous "Yep, I'm Gay" Time magazine cover in 1997. "It made it so much easier for me what you did."

The Emmy-winning Glee star said she never wanted to hide that she was gay, but wondered how to or if she should come out. Lynch added that being a character actor made it easier.

"If Julia Roberts were gay, I think it would be harder. She's an ingénue. You want to project your hopes and dreams for love [on stars] like Brad Pitt," she said.

Lynch, 50, married psychologist Lara Embry in May.
