Teen to Jamie Lynn Spears: Sex Is OK, but Use a Condom
On Dec. 18, the story swooped down on the Internet: Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old star of Nickelodeon's Zoey 101 and the kid sis of Britney, is pregnant. Immediately, readers of TVGuide.com's news blog, "friends of the family" and other celebrities began sounding off on the shocking headline. TVGuide.com invited a regular teenager to share her view of the news. Here is her take: "Now, I personally do not know Jamie Lynn Spears, but it is my guess that she, along with most teenagers, myself included, did not plan on having children pre-high-school graduation. "Now, I personally do not know Jamie Lynn Spears, but it is my guess that she, along with most teenagers, myself included, did not plan on having children pre-high-school graduation. I am not judging her for her choices; I think that it is perfectly acceptable to have premarital sex.
"However, what bothers me most about teen pregnancy and most of what teenagers do in their lives is how no one looks into the future. Many mothers do not agree with the choices that Jamie Lynn made and are emphasizing how she became a disgraceful role model to their innocent, preteen children, which, I in part agree with.
"Yet society needs to realize that all kids make mistakes. Some just happen to be a little more life changing than others.
"The only thing I have to say to Jamie Lynn is that she needs to take responsibility for her actions, because if she wants to continue to be a role model, she needs to prove that she can learn and grow from her mistakes. If not, I suggest, Jamie Lynn, that the next time you plan on having sex, you should invest in some birth control, [like making] sure your boyfriend buys a condom."
