If Billboard magazine has its way, American Idol could have some competition in upcoming seasons.

The industry rag is developing Billboard Next, a reality TV project to discover new music talent, across genres, via a website and TV series, says the Reporter. Aspiring artists would be able to upload footage to the site, where viewers can vote on who they want to compete. The artists with the most votes will go on to compete on TV. While not much else has been revealed about the proposed show (apart from an industry partner, Fluid Music), Billboard will reportedly be shopping it around to networks.

Could this series take on the Idol behemoth, in terms of viewer interest? Could it help reshape the music biz? Time will tell, but the guessing game can start now. - Anna Dimond
