HBO's His Dark Materials Trailer Is Already Giving Us the Adaptation We Deserve

We can finally forget all about the tragic movie adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materialsbecause HBO's TV series looks like it's finally going to get it right!

The Season 1 trailer for HBO's new fantasy series is packed full of awesome scenes and characters from the first novel of the series. His Dark Materials tells the story of Lyra Belacqua (Logan's Dafne Keen), a 12-year-old girl who lives in a parallel universe where a theocracy rules with an iron fist and human souls take the form of animal companions known as dæmons. Lyra sets out on a quest to find her uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), and her missing friend, Roger Parslow (Lewin Lloyd), who has been mysteriously kidnapped.

Besides a star-studded cast that also includes Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ruth Wilson, the eight-episode first season promises to be a much more in-depth adaptation of The Golden Compass (the first novel in the series) than the poorly received movie adaptation released in 2007.

His Dark Materials is expected to premiere in 2019 on HBO.
