CBS and 20th Century Fox have begun talks to bring back How I Met Your Mother for a ninth season, Variety reports.

The network and 20th, which produces the show, have no comment on the report, but according to Variety

and Craig Thomas
expire after the upcoming eighth season, along with CBS' license deal with 20th.CBS renewed the comedy for two more seasons in March 2011, giving Bays and Thomas the opportunity to plot out the series and the inevitable introduction the titular mother. In May, Thomas told TVGuide.com
that they have a Plan A and a Plan B depending on whether Season 8 is the final season, but they will need to know for sure soon.
