Henry Cavill, best known for playing Superman in the current DC Comics film series and for his role in this summer's action blockbuster Mission: Impossible - Fallout, is taking his big body to the small screen. He'll star as demon slayer Geralt of Rivia on Netflix's fantasy series The Witcher, based on the fantasy world created by novelist Andrzej Sapkowski.

"The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family," says Netflix. "Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together." The eight-episode first season is executive-produced by Daredevil's Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.

The Witcher, which does not yet have a premiere date, is going to be Netflix's attempt at filling the cultural void left when HBO's megahit fantasy series Game of Thrones ends next year. Other contenders include Amazon's Lord of the Rings series, the BBC's His Dark Materials and HBO's own Game of Thrones prequel spin-off.
