There Won't Be a Mystery Blogger in HBO Max's Gossip Girl Sequel

Gossip Girlis heading back to the small screen, but it sounds like HBO Max's sequel series is going to be a pretty drastic deviation from the early aughts teen drama we knew and loved.

Co-creator Josh Schwartz spoke to a small group of reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday and shed some light on what the reimagined series will look like and why now was the right time to bring it back.

"We felt like a version that was just our cast are grown up, just regardless of what the challenges would be of assembling these actors again, it didn't really feel like a group of adults who were being controlled by Gossip Girl would make a lot of sense," said Schwartz, who was on hand to promote his new Hulu miniseries Looking for Alaska. "We felt like there was something really interesting about this idea that we were all Gossip Girl now in our own way. That we were all kind of purveyors of our own social media surveillance state, and how that's evolved and how that has morphed and mutated, and telling that story through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids felt like the right time."

If we're all Gossip Girl, though, what does that mean for the mysterious gossip overlord who turned out to be Dan Humphrey despite that making absolutely zero sense? Schwartz was quick to confirm there would actually not be a "Who Is Gossip Girl?" mystery this time around. And frankly, considering the way the first mystery turned out to be even more confusing than Pretty Little Liar's "Who Is A?" storyline, we can't say that will be a terrible loss.

However, Schwartz did point out the series will be set in the same world, so grown-up versions of Serena (Blake Lively), Blair (Leighton Meester), Dan (Penn Badgley) and the rest do exist in this world. Whether or not we'll ever see them is still up for debate though.

"If they want to be involved in some way, we've reached out to a lot them to let them know it was happening and that we would love for them to be involved if they want to be involved," Schwartz said. "They played those characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that we wanted to respect that, but obviously any time anybody wants, it would be great to see them again."
