George Clooney Rejects Daily Mail Apology: They Are the Worst Kind of Tabloid

The Daily Mail has apologized for its false story about the mother of George Clooney's fiancée, but the actor is having none of it.

Earlier this week, the paper stated that Baria Alamuddin was against Clooney's marriage to her daughter Amal based on religious grounds. Clooney slammed the Mail for "inciting violence" and "[exploiting] religious differences where none exist." The publication quickly deleted the story and apologized, but insisted that the article was "not a fabrication" but was supplied by a trusted journalist who had "conversations with senior members of the Lebanese community."

Emmys: Snubs and surprises

"The problem is that none of that is true," Clooney wrote in a second op-ed for USA Today publishedFriday. "The original story never cites that source, but instead goes out of its way to insist on four different occasions that 'a family friend' spoke directly to the Mail. A 'family friend' was the source. So either they were lying originally or they're lying now."

Clooney goes on to give evidence that the Mail knew it was lying when it falsely stated that Baria was a member of the Druze faith, citing an April article in which a Mail reporter noted that Amal's mother does not subscribe to that religion.

"What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie," Clooney writes. "So I thank theMail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they've exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid."
