But the duo didn't find it funny at first

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have ended their self-imposed exile, having previously skipped San Diego Comic-Con in July. The duo gave their first interview since the HBO hit wrapped up to mixed reviews earlier this summer to Japan's Star Channel, which means we finally got their take on the infamous coffee cup.

"We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn't see this coffee cup right in the middle," Benioff explained of the cup, which appeared in the fourth episode of the final season. "So at first I couldn't believe it, and then it was embarrassment; 'how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?' And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it's kind of funny to us now."

Although Benioff and Weiss claim to have seen the humor in the situation, HBO later digitally edited the cup out of the scene. No word on whether the showrunners found the errant water bottle that appeared in the finale funny as well, or if they've been able to laugh off the scathing criticism the final season faced.
