Will Ferrell Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell can bring the funny, but he hasn't been able to bring in the big bucks, according to Forbes.

The actor has topped the magazine's list of Hollywood's most overpaid stars, largely due to his summer disappointment, Land of the Lost.

After examining stars' salaries compared with the revenue each film generated over the past five years, Forbes determined Ferrell's films earned an average of $3.29 for every dollar he was paid. On the other end of the spectrum, Shia LaBeouf's flicks reeled in an average of $160 for every dollar he was paid.

of the Lost grossed only $65 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. Also hurting Ferrell — once a box-office comedy king with Elf and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby — were his underwhelming outings for Semi-Pro ($43 million) and Step-Brothers ($128 million).Coming in second place behind Ferrell was Ewan McGregor. While the Scottish star has never commanded a large paycheck, his post-Star Wars films have made little box office impact, averaging a return of $3.75.

Billy Bob Thornton came in third place ($4), followed by Eddie Murphy, who avoided topping Forbes' dubious list thanks to 2007's Norbit, which made $160 million. Murphy's recent bombs, Meet Dave and Imagine That, contributed to an average return of $4.43.

Tom Cruise landed in sixth place with a return investment of $7.18. The actor has been striking unusual film contracts that stipulate he take nothing up front in exchange for a chunk of the film's gross. The deal resulted in him getting paid for duds like Lions for Lambs even if the studio did not recoup its money, Forbes said.
