Celebrated author-essayist-activist Susan Sontag, widely considered one of the most influential social critics of the last 50 years, died Tuesday morning of complications of acute myelogenous leukemia. She was 71. Sontag's seminal works included the 1964 essay "Notes on Camp" and the novels Illness as Metaphor and In America, the latter of which won her a National Book award.
