A Family Guy-The Orville Crossover May Be in the Works

Family Guystars Seth MacFarlane, Seth Green, Mila Kunis and Rachael MacFarlane (doing an admirable job filling in as Lois for the absent Alex Borstein), plus producers Travis Bowe, Rich Appel, Alec Sulkin and Cherry Chevapravat-Dumrong descended on the Television Critics Association winter press tour for a live table read of an upcoming episode and preview some upcoming stuff in their 16th season, like the 300th episode.

The episode read, "Girl, Internetted," is an upcoming episode about internet fame. In the episode, "Refrigerator Meg" becomes famous on social media for eating disgusting food (and being shaped like a refrigerator). She develops diabetes and starts doing sponsored content for Pancreatone, a diabetes drug with euphoric, hallucinogenic side effects. A lot of the cutaway jokes are about manly-man Coors and Chevy pitchman Sam Elliot's gravelly narration of the absurd events taking place.

Executive producer Alec Sulkin provided Elliott's voice, and did a very solid impression. Asked if he had been lobbying to get his impression on the show, he said that they actually hoped to get the real Elliott, a fan of the show who has attended a table read in the past.

Asked about how he reacted when he found out about the impending Disney-Fox merger, creator and star Seth MacFarlane said he was "remarkably unfazed." He has no anxiety about what will happen to Family Guy if it becomes property of the House of Mouse. He expects that Disney will allow Fox to continue to be its own brand, like it did with the similarly edgy Touchstone Pictures film studio in the '80s.

"I don't think a whole lot is going to change," he said.

Appel also teased a potential crossover with MacFarlane's live-action series The Orville. They said the writers of Family Guy have written a script where "we end of live on the bridge of The Orville." He said they've sent it to MacFarlane for approval. But don't hold your breath.

"I sort of live with everything I do being compared to Family Guy," MacFarlane said, "so my first instinct is to let that be its own thing."

But that doesn't mean he's definitely saying no: "To be continued," MacFarlane said.
