The Crown's Claire Foy Pulls off the Upset and Wins the Emmy for Best Drama Actress

In a pretty shocking upset, Claire Foy won the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Queen Elizabeth on Season 2 of The Crownat the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday. She beat last year's winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale) andThe Americans' Keri Russell, who many hoped would be recognized for her cumulative work in the recently completed series. She also beat Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld).

"This wasn't supposed to happen," Foy said in her acceptance speech, just as surprised as anyone else. "I just felt so proud then, of being in the company of such extraordinary performances. I know everyone's talking at the moment about women in the industry, but if that's anything to go by, bloody hell! -- and that's technically not swearing."

She shouted out Sandra Oh specifically, saying "I just love ya."

"I had the most extraordinary two-and-a-half years of my life... I was given a role that I never thought I would ever get a chance to play," Foy said. "And the show goes on, which makes me so, so proud. So I dedicate this to the next cast, the next generation, and I also dedicate this to Matt Smith." Smith played her husband, Prince Philip, on the series.

There's no chance for a repeat, since Foy will not be eligible in this category for The Crown's next season as the Netflix historical drama is jumping forward in time and the role is being taken over by Olivia Colman.

Foy previously won two SAGs and a Golden Globe for her performance as the monarch.
