Box Office: Planet of the Apes Continues to Dominate

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues to reign supreme in theaters, topping the box office for the second week in a row with Week 2 earnings of $36 million, Box Office Mojo reports.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues to reign supreme in theaters, topping the box office for the second week in a row with Week 2 earnings of $36 million, Box Office Mojo reports.

Though it didn't do well enough to fell Planet of the ApesThe Purge: Anarchy earned an impressive $28.4 million in its debut, landing at No. 2. That's about a 17 percent dropoff from the original 2013 movie.

Planes: Fire & Rescue opened in third place with a disappointing $18 million, while the raunchy comedy Sex Tape bombed in its debut, coming in at No. 4 with $15 million.

Bumped by the new releases, Transformers: Age of Extinction fell three spots to No. 5 with $10 million.

In sixth place was Tammy with $7.6 million, followed by 22 Jump Street, which took in $4.7 million in its sixth week in theaters.

Rounding out the Top 10 were How to Train Your Dragon 2 (No. 8, $3.8 million), Maleficent (No. 9, $3.3 million) and Earth to Echo (No. 10, $3.2 million).
