Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: The Rain, Nailed It!

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 17-May 23.

Not gonna lie, if you have been putting off that run to Bed, Bath & Beyond, this weekend might be a good one to do it. The crop of new releases on Netflix this week is not conducive to laying on your couch for 48 hours with a clicker in your hand. There are a lot of international releases and a few things for kids coming out this week, so if you're an international kid, you're all set. Maybe watch Catch-22 on Hulu or Fleabag on Amazon instead. Or just go back and rewatch I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson because I'm still laughing about that "the bones are their money" song. That show is the best.

The Biggest Releases

The Rain, Season 2
Remember when we were kids and lived in fear of acid rain? This show remembers. Except if the rain in this Danish show touches your skin, you DIE. After the death rain obliterates most of the human population, a small group of survivors tries to keep on livin'. This is the closest approximation of what it's like when it rains in Los Angeles.

Nailed It!, Season 3
Failure is a part of life, and it's an even bigger part of this show, in which amateur bakers are set up to fail by trying to replicate extremely complicated confections. The joy of Nailed It! isn't watching contestants give their best, it's knowing they won't even be able to come close and seeing the pathetic fruits of their labor during the unveiling of their sorry, sucky creations. However, it's not mean-spirited, with everyone happy to just be there. Season 3 includes an episode featuring Marvel-themed cakes, and the finished products look like they're in mid-Thanos snap. Everything Else

See You Yesterday
A pair of teens in New York City invent a couple of time-traveling backpacks in this science-fiction adventure movie that's produced by Spike Lee and feels like a throwback to movies of the 1980s. But rather than using it to go back in time to kill baby Hitler or bet on the 1973 New York Knicks, they use their tech to try to save the life of one of their brothers, who gets shot by a police officer in their present timeline.

It's Bruno, Season 1
In this comedy, a guy and his dog walk around and do very New York City things, like speak with thick accents and be rude to each other. (Trailer)

This docuseries follows the tumultuous political year in Mexico, which included the rise of the EZLN and the assassination of president Luis Donaldo Colosio. (Trailer)

Chip & Potato, Season 1
Following the tradition of kids shows named after the two characters they feature, Chip & Potato follows a (throws dart at dartboard) pug puppy and her (spins wheel of animals) tiny mouse friend as they start kindergarten. (Trailer)

Maria
This martial-arts action blowout from the Philippines looks dope af. A woman kicks the bejeezus out of a bunch of people for reasons that don't really matter all that much in this movie. (Trailer)

Morir Para Contar
This Spanish documentary follows a war reporter who interviews others in his line of occupation to discuss the personal toll they took from their horrifying experiences of their jobs. Meanwhile, I complain about having too many screeners to watch in my job. (Trailer)

White Gold, Season 2
Ed Westwick plays a salesman who is willing to do ANYTHING in this dark comedy set in 1980's Essex, England. (Trailer)

Prince of Peoria, Part 2
A boy prince from a fake country goes undercover as a normal boy in a real country and befriends a schoolmate. Then they do wacky things like tie balloons to lawn chairs to try to float into the sky! This is exactly how my experience in middle school went, except I didn't have any friends and some bullies duct taped me to a bus bench. (Monday, May 20 / Trailer)

Wanda Sykes: Not Normal

One Spring Night, Season 1
In this Korean drama, a young man and a young woman meet. What happens next is anyone's guess! What could a young man and young woman possibly do together? (Wednesday, May 22 / Trailer)

A Tale of Two Kitchens
If you're like me and want to be buried in a casket full of Mexican food, then dig into this film about the differences and samesies between two restaurants, one in Mexico and one in San Francisco, run by the same star chef from Mexico. (Trailer)

Slasher: Solstice, Season 3
You can't throw a bloody kitchen knife without hitting a horror anthology here in America, and the craze has apparently made its way up to Canada.
