Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: The Politician, Living Undocumented

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 3.

All the investments Netflix has made in hoarding celebrity producers is really coming to fruition. The Obama-produced American Factory came out last month, and this month brings two more well-known names doing whatever it is producers do. Ryan Murphy, of American Horror Story fame, releases the first of what should be a billion shows for Netflix with The Politician, and Selena Gomez -- yes, that Selena Gomez -- sheds some of that Disney image with a docuseries about undocumented immigrants. With streaming services gobbling up everything they can to produce some of the sweet, sweet content, it's only a matter of time before I'm writing about your new TV show.

The Biggest Releases

The Politician, Season 1
Netflix pulled up a dump truck full of cash and emptied its contents right onto Ryan Murphy's head to pry him away from Fox and FX, and this dark comedy is his first project for the streamer. It stars Ben Platt (Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen) as a young man with an obsessive presidential aspiration, and the entire series -- it's a sort of anthology -- follows his journey to the country's highest office, with each season focusing on a particular election. Season 1 starts with the fight to become president of his high school and includes some musical elements, because Ryan Murphy loves a little bit of everything. The early reviews are pretty divisive, with some calling it one of the best new shows of the year and some saying its hollow and mean. Sounds pretty on brand for Murphy.

Living Undocumented, Season 1
This docuseries follows the lives of families living in America without American citizenship, examining the fear and struggles they live with every day. The other headline? It's produced by Selena Gomez. (Trailer / Wednesday, Oct. 2)

Everything Else

In the Shadow of the Moon
This is one of those movies where the trailer is all ZOONNNNNNNNG and RRRENNNNNNNNG and WOMMMMMMMMMP because it wants you to know that stuff is about to go down. Boyd Holbrook, who helped kill Pablo Escobar in Narcos, stars as a cop chasing down a female serial killer who leaves puncture wounds in her victims' necks and is awfully hard to kill, even when she's flattened by a speeding subway car. Vampire? Nah, too obvious! I'm going with time-traveling space marine who must extract spinal fluid to save an alien race of mutant penguins. Michael C. Hall also stars.

Bard of Blood
This eight-episode series comes from India, and with a name like that, I thought we were getting another cool short horror series like Ghoul. But nope, this one is about Indian spies captured in Pakistan, and the school-teacher-turned-super-agent who must rescue them. (Trailer)

Dragons: Rescue Riders, Season 1
Back when I was a kid, dragons were ferocious creatures that were not to be messed with. Now they're cuddly creatures who fart, apparently, in this spin-off of How to Train Your Dragon. (Trailer)

Carmen Sandiego, Season 2

El Marginal, Season 3
An undercover cop on assignment inside a prison is tasked with keeping a rich kid alive in this Argentinian drama. Argentinian prison looks weird; people are dressed in soccer jerseys and there are shanty towns all over the place. If I'm breaking the law, I'm doing it there. (Trailer)

Skylines, Season 1
When you think hip-hop, you think Germany! This German drama is set at a rap record label where the side business is selling drugs, which doesn't sit well with a newly signed producer. Don't be a narc, dude! (Trailer)

Sturgill Simpson Presents Sound & Fury
When you think alt-country artist Sturgill Simpson, you think post-apocalyptic anime! The Grammy winner is releasing an album on Friday, and accompanying it will be this animated special depicting a dystopian future. Sure, why not. (Trailer)

Mo Gilligan: Momentum
The British comedian makes jokes about birthdays and VAT in this stand-up special. (Trailer / Monday, Sept. 30)

Nikki Glaser: Bangin'
I watched the first six seconds of the trailer of this and threw my laptop across the room. Go on, I DARE YOU --> (Trailer / Tuesday, Oct. 1)

Rotten, Season 1
If you have been looking at the mirror and figure you could stand to lose a few pounds, watch this six-part documentary that chews up and spits out the food industry, from despicable farming techniques to questionable fishing techniques that put products in your supermarket that aren't what they say they are. You won't want to eat anything after watching this. I'll pass and be blissfully mowing down this 20-piece Chicken McNuggets combo meal. (Trailer / Wednesday, Oct. 2)
