Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: Point Blank, Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of July 12-18

This week Netflix is coming down from its Stranger Things 3 high -- it had the biggest opening weekend of any Netflix original ever, at least according to Netflix -- so no major releases are getting added to the streaming service. In fact, one of the week's most notable releases, a goofy comedy special called Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein, stars Stranger Things' David Harbour. No spoilers if you haven't watched Stranger Things yet, but this might be the last Harbour you're gonna get on Netflix for a while. But just because there are no big releases doesn't mean there no releases. This is Netflix, after all, where content never sleeps.

The Biggest Releases

Point Blank
Captain America: The Winter Soldier buds Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo reunite for this action thriller about a nurse, Paul (Mackie), who teams up under duress with Abe (Grillo), a career criminal, to rescue his kidnapped pregnant wife and bring down some corrupt cops who've framed Abe for murder. It's as generic as its title suggests, but it's shot on location in Cincinnati, which makes it look slightly different than if it were shot in Los Angeles or New York or Atlanta or Budapest or wherever this kind of movie usually takes place.

Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein
Netflix's official description of this half-hour special is "When actor David Harbour finds lost footage of his father's disastrous televised stage play of a literary classic, he uncovers shocking family secrets." That kinda describes what this is, but the title itself actually gives a better sense of the tone. It's a very weird and intentionally bad mockumentary, with poor-quality "archival footage" of the play interspersed with a "documentary" about Harbour trying to figure out why his "father" (also Harbour) was the way he was. 3Below: Tales of Arcadia, Season 2
Guillermo del Toro created this animated series, which boasts above-average computer animation and a star-studded voice cast that includes Tatiana Maslany, Diego Luna, Glenn Close, and Steven Yeun, who also lent his voice to del Toro's previous Netflix animated series, Trollhunters. In Season 2, stranded alien royalty Princess Aja (Maslany) and Prince Krel (Luna) continue their quest to escape Earth and go home. GDT phone home, you feel me?

4 Latas
Jean Reno and Hovik Keuchikarian take a road trip from Spain to Mali to reunite with a terminally ill friend, with the man's estranged daughter in tow, in this Little Miss Sunshine-esque comedy from Spain. (Trailers)

Blown Away, Season 1
Project Runway for glass-blowers. Incredible craftsmanship under high heat, literally and figuratively. (Trailer)

Bonus Family, Season 3
More tearjerking family drama in Season 3 of this Swedish series as Patrik's estranged father re-enters the picture to reconnect with his son and his family before he dies. (Trailer)

Extreme Engagement, Season 1
An Australian couple puts their commitment to the test before they get married by traveling all over the world and seeing how couples in the most difficult places on Earth make it work in this tense docuseries. It kind of seems like they don't get along and maybe shouldn't get married! (Trailer)

Kidnapping Stella
Netflix actually has two kidnapping thrillers this week. There's Point Blank, and there's this German flick about two crooks who get more than they bargained for when they hold a rich man's daughter for ransom. What I'm saying is she doesn't get Stockholm Syndrome. (Trailer)

Luis Miguel - The Series, Season 1
This is a co-production between Netflix and Telemundo about the life of Mexican singer Luis Miguel, one of Latin America's biggest pop stars. It takes fans inside the life of the famously private singer, as Season 1 covers his ascent to stardom and his complicated relationship with his demanding father/manager. (Trailer)

Taco Chronicles, Volume 1
Your mouth will water just watching the trailer for this Spanish-language docsuseries about the history of the taco. Mmm, barbacoa. (Trailer)

True Tunes
True, a blue-haired, big-eyed Netflix character you probably know if you have kids in the 3-7 range, sings nursery rhyme melodies with the lyrics changed to be about True stuff. So if you hear your kid singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" but it's about "Mila" and her "blubb," this is why. (Trailer)

Pinky Malinky, Part 3
Everyone's favorite happy-go-lucky talking hot dog is back for more hilarious adventures. Pinky Malinky has one of the catchiest theme songs of the streaming era. (Wednesday, July 17 / Trailer)

Secret Obsession
Brenda Song plays a woman who starts to suspect the man who took her home from the hospital after she suffered a memory-damaging head injury isn't her husband in this domestic thriller. This is one of those kinds of movies that used to be very common but went away for a while and is now making a comeback on Netflix. (Trailer)
