Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: Designated Survivor, Rolling Thunder Revue

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of June 7-June 13.

It's beautiful outside, so why is Netflix putting out all this stuff to keep us cooped up inside? There's a lot of promising stuff available to stream this week, like Season 3 of Designated Survivor, a heady sci-fi flick with Hilary Swank called I Am Mother, and two music documentaries, one of which is about Bob Dylan and directed by Martin Scorsese. There's some cool international stuff, too, like another installment of the technically impressive The 100-ish Brazilian sci-fi series 3%, and a Middle Eastern supernatural YA series called Jinn that looks like a lot of fun. No matter where you go in the world, you can find sexy teens having ghost problems.

The Biggest Releases

Designated Survivor, Season 3
Netflix saved Kiefer Sutherland's political potboiler from cancellation last year, and it's finally here. It's a pretty similar show to the one it was on ABC, just with swear words now, and maybe a butt here and there, though it's not the butt parade that's the Netflix incarnation of the similarly rescued Lucifer. If you thought a move to Netflix meant you'd finally get to see Kiefer's Sutherlands, you're out of luck. But what you're getting is another solid season of dadcore TV about a president who wasn't even supposed to be here doing his best, dammit.

I Am Mother
Who is mother? Hilary Swank? Daughter? Robot with the voice of Rose Byrne? Jennifer Lawrence? I know two things for sure: 1) This good-looking sci-fi movie will have at least one of these three potential twists, and 2) I am baby. (Trailer)

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese
This documentary about Bob Dylan's legendary 1975 tour of small venues in small cities in search of the spirit of America -- with musicians like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and Roger McGuinn in tow -- is Martin Scorsese's second doc about Bob Dylan, after 2005's No Direction Home (and his third that's Dylan-adjacent, after The Last Waltz). Everything Else

3%, Season 3
One of Netflix's biggest international shows is back for a third season that expands the post-apocalyptic world to include the Shell, an alternative to the Continent and the Offshore. There's hope for a better life there, but all is not well in the Shell.

The Black Godfather
This week's other music doc tracks the remarkable career of Clarence Avant, a talent manager, music executive, and film producer who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential behind-the-scenes people in entertainment. You may not know his name, but people whose names you do know -- like Barack Obama and Quincy Jones, who are interviewed in the movie -- revere him. Familiarize yourself. (Trailer)

The Chef Show, Season 1
An extremely low-key hangout docuseries where actor/director Jon Favreau (the man behind the movie Chef) and his friend Roy Choi (food truck visionary behind Korean taco truck Kogi/inspiration and advisor to Chef) hang out with other filmmakers and chefs and make food and talk about cooking and creativity. It's barely a TV show, but it's a pleasant thing to have on in the background. (Trailer)

Elisa & Marcela
The beautiful black-and-white cinematography is the most striking thing about this movie at first glance, but it's in service of an equally beautiful story about the first same-sex marriage in Spain, where a woman took on a male identity to marry the woman she loved in 1901. (Trailer)

Pachamama
Most Netflix content for children looks cheap, but not Pachamama. This movie has some of the richest, most sophisticated animation I've ever seen on the streaming service. The movie tells the story of a boy who goes on a mission to reclaim a sacred statue after it's stolen from his Andean village. (Trailer)

Rock My Heart
Aka The German Horse Girl Movie. A teenager with a heart defect tames a very fast but very temperamental stallion. (Trailer)

Super Monsters Monster Pets
Wow, the Super Monsters have pets, and the pets have their own thing now. This is no Pachamama. (Trailer)

Tales of the City, Miniseries
Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis return for another installment of this long-running San Francisco-set LGBT family drama anthology series, the first since 2001 and first for Netflix. They're joined by Ellen Page for this go-round. (Trailer)

Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot
Comedian Jo Koy's second Netflix special was taped in Hawaii, which is a novel place to tape a stand-up special. He opens with about five minutes of Hawaii material, but he's got nothing on Katt Williams doing 15 minutes on Jacksonville. That s--- was crazy. (Trailer / Wednesday, June 12)

The 3rd Eye 2
Indonesian horror. A haunted orphange. Spooky stuff. (Trailer / Thursday, June 13)

Jinn, Season 1
Supernatural YA from Jordan. Some teenagers get caught in the middle of a battle between two jinn. It's kind of rare to see an Arabic-language take on the genre, so aficionados should check it out. (Trailer / Thursday, June 13)

Kakegurui xx
OK, so this is an anime about a school where the students learn to gamble really, really well. This kind of thing is very not for me, so I don't have anything to say about it, but maybe it's for you, in which case, here it is! (Trailer / Thursday, June 13)
