Watch Alternatino's Arturo Castro Explain These Latin American Pop Culture Icons

From El Chacal to Pedro el Escamoso

Arturo Castro, creator and star of Comedy Central's new sketch show Alternatino With Arturo Castro, is doing his part for Latinx representation on TV by showing the world from his unique perspective. He grew up in Guatemala, where he watched Latin American TV that most Americans might not be familiar with (as well as Frasier, his favorite show of all time). If you grew up, for example, Irish Catholic, in, say, upstate New York, you may have heard of Sábado Gigante or recognize Chapulín Colorado as the inspiration for Bee Man from The Simpsons, but you might not understand exactly who or what they are.

Well, Arturo Castro is here to help. In this video, he explains:

-Sábado Gigante's El Chacal, "the dude who would trumpet you out if your act sucked."

-Walter Mercado, every Latin American mom's favorite astrologer.

-Chapulín Colorado, "a crappy superhero."

-Betty la Fea, who probably wouldn't fly in 2019.

-Cantinflas, the Charlie Chaplin of Mexico.

-La Chilindrina, who was very annoying, and

-Pedro el Escamoso, the original scammer.
