This dark and downbeat entry into Japan's popular LA FEMME NIKITA-inspired ZERO WOMAN series follows a female secret agent as she attempts to smash a syndicate dealing in black market human organs. Rei (Chieko Shiratori) is a member of Zero Force, a top-secret government agency, and when she's not busy brooding in her atmospheric apartment, she's taking down bad guys by the handful. Zero Force has been called in to bust up an organ trafficking racket, and Rei is assigned to guard Nana (Ichiho Matsuda), the shallow, talkative mistress of the syndicate boss (Masayashi Nogami). As the relationship between the two women develops, Rei sees there's more to Nana than what meets the eye: She learns that Nana is having an affair with the boss's assistant and reluctant bed partner and that Nana's flight from the boss is part of a larger plot to extricate both of them from the clutches of the mob. Meanwhile, the daughter of a prominent politician is in desperate need of a heart transplant, and the cops are pressured into calling off their investigation. Rei is ordered to stop guarding Nana, and she temporarily turns her out onto the street. Nana's boyfriend can't summon the nerve to go through with their escape plans, and another assistant begins to suspect that something is going on. The creepy syndicate boss who gives unctuous speeches about those who "deserve to live and those who don't" seems to be losing his grip on reality as the intrigue whirls around him. Everything comes to a head in a grand guignol finish that leaves Rei back in her apartment, still brooding. The pace might be too languorous for some viewers, but the interplay between the women is well done and both give solid performances. In true film noir fashion, the world is revealed to be irredeemably corrupt, a place where the strong devour all that they want. It's a fact that Rei reminds herself of every day: She keeps goldfish in her bathroom which she then feeds to the giant fish in her living room. Warning: The film is not for the squeamish. There are two very graphic and bloody scenes involving cannibalism and disembowelment.
