Fonda, a widowed Navy officer with 10 children, meets Ball, a widowed nurse with eight children. They begin dating and finally marry, despite the unhappy prospect of raising 18 children under one roof. The expected problems with food, privacy, and bathroom rights abound, as do jealousies among the children. One of Ball's sons begins to see Fonda's eldest son as a kind of hero, however, and barriers are broken even further when Ball announces that she's pregnant. With the new baby's birth the children decide they want a formal adoption so they can all be one family. In the end

Fonda's eldest goes to war, and one of Ball's daughters falls in love, two events that knit the large family together for good. The potential for "Brady Bunch"-style saccharine is enormous here, but happily YOURS, MINE AND OURS never condescends to the true story it was based on, and the direction manages to place the enormous cast of children in believable situations. Ball, whose Desilu production company was behind the film, is surprisingly good, and Fonda, who was Ball's second choice after Fred ("My Three Sons") MacMurray proved unavailable, delivers a warm, fatherly performance.
