Swain is a senator running for reelection in an unnamed Southwestern state. Governor Allen, his political foe, enlists help from the White House to defeat Swain. The entire campaign takes an unexpected twist when some New York ad men, led by movie producer Sager, make a candidate out of

popular country-singer King. King is forced to go against his conscience in his campaign but eventually his scruples succumb to the prospect of power. His fiancee, Riddle, leaves him to join a strike that King now opposes, and she is raped during a demonstration. King is urged by Sager to use the

sympathy factor to gain votes, but this unsavory suggestion proves to be too much even for King, and he fires the advisors. The remainder of the campaign is run his way and is, of course, a failure. Without any Madison Avenue gloss, King is shown to be an unimposing individual. Swain is reelected,

and King is relieved that his ordeal is over. Allen decides that the voters have taken their stand against political commercialization, and Sager sees the outcome as a mere blip on the screen of the political future. The commercialization and packaging of political hopefuls is an interesting

theme, dealt with in such movies as THE CANDIDATE (1972) and POWER (1986). This production, however, is a product of Lewis, the infamous producer of such cinematic garbage as BLOOD FEAST and THE GORE GORE GIRLS. Although this film represents a departure from his usual subject matter-- violence for

profit's sake--the movie shows not an iota of intelligence or insight into the subject.
