An arty continental soap opera redeemed by a terrific ensemble cast. Linda (Almodovar muse Carmen Maura) is the star of a TV magazine show, with a gorgeous, long suffering boyfriend (Joaquin de Almeida) that she can't commit to. Rather than see a shrink, she

decides to videotape four of her equally screwed up gal pals of a certain age for a segment on (you guessed it) What Women Want. This being the late '90s, the answers are a tad ambiguous. Eva (the luminous Miou-Miou) is having an affair with the 20-something son of a best friend. Sex addict

Branca (Guesch Patti) has a Goth daughter working on a world class heroin habit. Chloe (Marisa Berenson) is still struggling, after 40 plus years, to come to terms with the fact that she wants to sleep with women. And Barbara (Marthe Keller) is in love with her ex-husband and intensely jealous of

his various bimbos. Okay, class -- can you guess which character will come down with cancer? Fortunately, writer/director Luis Galvao Teles doesn't throw in every other chick flick cliché in the book (even if the "Truth or Dare" set-up is just a bit pretentious) and in any case it's easy to

overlook his film's essentially sudsy nature in the face of the force of mature performances he gets from his five leading ladies, Keller in particular. (French with English subtitles)
