Betty Compson plays a French ballerina who has a brief affair with Englishman Barraud during WW I. He leaves her pregnant, promising to come back after his stint in the front lines. He doesn't, the heavy shelling causing him to lose his memory, and instead returns to London to marry the

wealthy Juliette Compton. Years pass before Betty Compson finds herself making an appearance on the London stage and once again running into her old flame. Emotions start to fly, with Barraud realizing that he has fathered a child, something he is happy about because his wife is barren. In her

moment of extreme sacrifice, Betty Compson gives up her boy to Barraud and Juliette Compton, while she dies. The object in this tearjerker seemed to be to try to put as many lumps as possible in the patrons' throats but the hardboiled ruled the day and stayed away.
