Near the turn of the 19th century, Lindblom languishes in a prison cell, awaiting execution. In flashback, she recalls the events of her trial, which have outlined her violation of a social taboo. She and her son, codefendant Ekman, have been indicted for murder and incest. Ekman had

married Schollin to quell community misgivings about his relationship with his mother. When Schollin attempted to force the impotent Ekman to consummate the marriage, he beat her unconscious, and his mother strangled her. Ekman is tricked into confessing the murder that Lindblom actually

committed, which she does to save her son. A dark and forbidding drama from Sweden's most prolific director, Mattsson, who helmed that country's greatest box-office attraction, ONE SUMMER OF HAPPINESS (1955), before segueing into crassly commercial crime pictures. This film brought him back to the

critical acclaim he had managed to avoid for a decade.
