Cranky hypochondriac Jeayes, who has turned his home into a virtual hospital suite, attempts to refashion his bright, vivacious wife, Stockfeld, into a nurse. On a sea trip with her constantly ailing husband, Stockfeld meets young surgeon Nares. Home again, she seeks respite from the

tyranny of her husband's health problems with Nares, attending concerts with him and having long talks in public places. Ironically, Jeayes develops a real illness--a serious spinal disease--and selects Nares as the surgeon who will operate on him. Jeayes then discovers what he incorrectly

believes to be his wife's infidelity with Nares, and tells the young doctor that if he should die from the operation, he has left a letter accusing the surgeon of murder. The horrible hypochondriac's footman, Curzon, floats impassively through the production, reacting with raised eyebrows to the

goings-on. The operation is successful, and the jubilant Jeayes confronts his unwilling wife with the prospect of more unbearable bondage. During the course of his treatment, Nares has discovered that Jeayes has another real health problem, a weak heart. Footman Curzon hears his master being told

of the condition and warned that any sudden shock might prove fatal to Jeayes. Curzon, who has waited many years to avenge himself on his irritable master, provides the necessary shock. Overacted, this quota film--financed by RKO to fulfill the British mandate that a certain percentage of the

films shown in the UK had to be homegrown--has its moments, most notably a surrealistic scene showing Jeayes' dreams as he sinks into unconsciousness under the operating room anesthetic. The exploitative American release title of the picture appears calculated to draw the droolers.
