Yugoslav journalist Gelin is enlisted by German policeman Drache to help locate Papas, the sole surviving ex-inmate of a concentration camp who police believe is an important witness in the camp physician's trial for wartime atrocities. Gelin, a friend of Papas in prewar times, traces her

whereabouts. Police and prosecutors try to convince her to testify at the trial, but the persecuted Papas refuses. Her tormentors persist in their entreaties to the point where Papas, once again persecuted, commits suicide rather than exist in a world that offers her no respite. Papas' performance

as the haunted concentration camp alumna is superb, with the rest of the international cast strictly secondary. Director Mitrovic, a seminal figure in Serbian cinema, made many war-related action films reflecting his experiences as a partisan fighter and a documentarist. (In German.)
