The central premise of WITHOUT A CLUE is that Dr. John Watson (Ben Kingsley) is the real crime solver and that Sherlock Holmes (Michael Caine) is actually an undistinguished actor by the name of Reginald Kincaid. For professional reasons, Watson invented Sherlock Holmes, hired Kincaid,

and presented him to the world as the great sleuth. But Kincaid, an inveterate drunk, has grown too big for his deerstalker. Watson gives him the sack, determined to make his own name as the Crime Doctor. Then the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Nigel Davenport) comes seeking Holmes/Kincaid's help

and isn't about to trust anyone else with a matter that could determine the fate of the empire. Watson is forced to rehire Kincaid for one more case. Beyond its clever role reversal, WITHOUT A CLUE doesn't offer many surprises. It does, however, feature fine comic performances by Caine and

Kingsley. Directed by Thom Eberhardt (NIGHT OF THE COMET), this particular Sherlock Holmes film works much better as a buddy picture than as a mystery, as Kingsley and Caine display a chemistry reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy. WITHOUT A CLUE is full of slapstick touches that will snowball for some

viewers and become tedious for others.
